Barcelona 2026: Front-Running Pace and an Impressive Charge from Roman Biliński

Although the Formula 2 weekend in Barcelona did not produce a headline result on paper, it was one of Roman Biliński’s most impressive performances of the season. From the moment he arrived in Catalonia, the Polish driver demonstrated the pace required to challenge at the front of the field, while the events of the weekend once again highlighted his determination, maturity, and racing ability.

Roman showed his speed from the outset, setting the second-fastest time in Free Practice. Everything pointed towards a strong qualifying result and a place among the leading contenders.

Unfortunately, luck was not on the Polish driver’s side. During one of his decisive qualifying laps, Biliński was on course for a top-three result, having set the third-fastest times in both Sector 1 and Sector 2. However, a red flag was shown just before he could complete the lap, preventing the time from being recorded and costing him the opportunity to secure a strong starting position.

As a result, both the Sprint Race and the Feature Race required Roman to fight back from much further down the order than his true pace deserved.

The Feature Race ultimately provided the clearest demonstration of Biliński’s potential. The Polish driver executed his strategy perfectly, managing his tyres exceptionally well while remaining patient and avoiding unnecessary risks.

The decisive phase came in the closing stages of the race. Once the majority of the field had completed their mandatory pit stops, Roman launched an impressive charge through the pack. With only a dozen laps remaining, a points finish still appeared to be a distant prospect. However, Biliński was running at one of the fastest paces in the entire field.

Over the final 12 laps, he overtook no fewer than eight rivals, climbing from 18th to 10th place and securing another valuable point in the Formula 2 championship standings.

An analysis of his pace in the closing stages suggests that, had the race lasted just two or three laps longer, a finish as high as seventh place could have been within reach.

While the final result does not fully reflect the performance Roman delivered throughout the weekend, Barcelona clearly demonstrated that the Polish driver possesses the speed and racecraft to compete with the very best in Formula 2.

The weekend in Spain leaves plenty of reasons for optimism. Despite suffering a significant setback in qualifying, Biliński once again proved his ability to fight back, recover positions, and maximise every opportunity available. The pace he displayed throughout the weekend suggests that even stronger results are only a matter of time.
